Mould Terminology
Below are some of the common terms used in reference to chocolate candy moulds:
Mould Cavity
The space in the plastic mould where the melted chocolate is inserted. The total number of cavities in a mould determines how many finished pieces will be yielded each time the mould is filled.
Closed-Bottom Mould
Used for making hollow 3D chocolate pieces. The closed bottom allows you to partially fill half the mould, then clip it together and rotate it. This motion coats the mould with the chocolate, and creates the space for it to be hollow.
Open-Bottom Mould
Used for making solid 3D chocolate pieces. When both halves of the is mould are clipped together, the bottom remains open. This mould is intended to be completely filled with melted chocolate and not have any hollow space.
Double Mould
When certain flat bottomed moulds are made twice, the pieces can be fit together to form a three-dimensional piece.
